Hieratic was the everyday script of ancient Egyptians, their form of cursive handwriting.
This App is the first to help in learning Hieratic!
200 hieratic characters are contained in the set. The app has versions of these characters from the Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom!
Included are all the alphabetic glyphs as well as the most common biliterals and triliterals (double and triple consonants).
For all who enjoys Ancient Egypt: Students, Enthusiasts, and Professionals!
Hieratic is very challenging to learn and while this App is not, by any means a complete reference, it
does offer a painless introduction to recognizing hieratic glyphs!
The App has three sets of flash cards:
- Match a Hieratic to a Hieroglyph
- Match a Hieratic to a phonetic sound
- Match a Hieroglyph to a Hieratic
And three presentation modes:
- Testing Mode with 3 choices
- Manual Learning shows just correct answer, advance when you are ready
- Auto Learning, just correct answer, timed advance to next card
An "Evolution" view shows how common hieratic glyphs evolved over the millennia.
The App also has several samples of well known, historic hieratic papyri with
transliteration (convert to latin-style characters) and translation (to English) to show you how its done.
Designed for off-line use, no internet required!
Glyph shapes are based on Georg Möller’s "Hieratische Paläographie" and Joshua Aaron Robersons "A Very Brief Introduction to Hieratic"
